With spring on the way we are sharing some tips on how you can make some yummy mini chocolate donuts with chocolate glaze decorated with pretty spring sprinkles. This is a quick treat to make with the help of a Babycakes Mini Donut Maker. If you don’t have one of those handy dandy machines you could bake them a mini donut baking pan.
The mini donut maker was super easy to use. We made the chocolate donut recipe from the little instruction-recipe book it comes with and had to make a few substitutions since I forgot to buy buttermilk. Thankfully the recipe book told how to make some with milk and vinegar. The machine heated up quick and the mini doughnuts baked up really fast (about 4 minutes). Before long we had quite the pile of mini chocolate donuts!
TIP FOR THE BATTER: The recipe book suggested putting the batter in a plastic bag and then snipping off the end so you can easily squeeze the batter in the donut cavity on the machine. I must have squeezed a bit too hard because I popped a hole in the side of the bag. We tried one of our plastic disposable frosting bags since the plastic is a bit thicker and that worked GREAT! Love when you can find other used for some of the baking supplies you have in your cupboard.
For the glaze we used Wilton Chocolate Glaze that I had picked up for impromptu baking projects. It is always good to keep a few baking staples in your pantry! You could make one of the glazes listed in the recipe book or make your own too. The Wilton chocolate glaze was easy to use and it was nice and thick so it didn’t run down the sides of the donuts. We heated it up in the container it came in following the instructions making sure not to overheat it. Transfer the glaze to a quart size freezer bag (or use one of our disposable frosting bags). Snip just a little of the tip off so you can apply some squiggles of glaze to the top of the donut. If the glaze is too hot it can drip down the donut so getting it warm enough but not too hot worked best. Decorate them one at a time with the glaze since you don’t want it to set up before you get the pretty spring sprinkles on them. Glaze a donut then sprinkle right away is our tip!
We are SO looking forward to spring so we wanted to use some of the pretty pastel non pareils and mini pastel polka dot sprinkles that we carry on the donuts. The soft and pretty colors really popped on the chocolate donuts and made for a pretty presentation.
Once your donuts are glazed and sprinkled they are ready to be enjoyed or displayed! A quick tip we can share if you want to make them fun for your kids, for a brunch or party is to make cute donuts and milk shooters. We found some pretty shot glasses that were short and wide that held a few sips of milk and the mini donuts fit right on top of the glass. Snip some of our pastel dot spring paper straws in half and place in the cup right in the middle of the donut for a fun presentation. Kids and adults will love this!
We hope you enjoy and make some spring donuts of your own! They would be perfect for Easter brunches too!
Happy spring!
