I needed a tree skirt for our new tree a couple years ago. We had gotten a new tree after Christmas the year before and it was a bigger tree, so the skirt we had was super tiny on it. I didn’t really want to pay the $50-$100 for another one. Tree skirts are fun, but only for a few days before you get the presents wrapped and then it’s covered up!
Most of my best thoughts come when pressured. And I was pressured! We decorate the day after Thanksgiving and everyone was waiting on me to decide what to do! I was trying to think of something round that I wouldn’t have to hem. And in that moment…a thought struck me! A TABLECLOTH! A round tablecloth is already hemmed! So I trotted myself over to the nearest Wal-mart. And lo and behold there was one there for $8.98! You have to know me to know how much I love a bargain!
Here is what I did to make it…Fold your cloth in half, and half again, and twice more, until you get a pie slice shape. Then cut the center fold end off to make the circle around the tree. I started with 2 inches. For my 72 inch cloth I ended up needing 3 inches cut off. It all depends on how big your tree is, and how big a hole you want.
Then cut straight up the middle on one side to make the opening. You can hem these raw edges if you like or use iron on hem tape, also available at Walmart! Then decorate it like you want. At that price I have made several. You can even afford to take it to your local monogrammer (me!) and have them put your family name on it!
There you have it! A lovely round hemmed cloth! Made even more special because it is cheap, easy, and personalized!
